GPA Phase 2:

GPA Phase 2 is approximately 150 hours long and consists of 3 sub-phases where GPs (Growing Participators also known as the learners of another langua-culture who are using the GPA approach), GPs and their Nurturers (those teaching them the language & culture) together make sentences to describe a wordless picture book and in the process encounter new vocabulary words in a powerful, visual context.

GPA Phase 3:

Can you understand the steps of making a Mango Lassi spoken in Hindi Urdu?
Can you understand the steps of making a Mango Lassi spoken in Hindi Urdu?

GPA Phase 3 is about 250 hours long and consists of various activities where a learner listens to stories in Hindi Urdu - the plot lines of which they are already familiar with in their own language. This includes activities such as the Bridge story where learners can read a famous fable in English and then listen to the story in Hindi/Urdu to grow their vocabulary and cultural understanding. If you're currently doing language sessions with us, be sure to check out the famous Indian Phase 3B fables in Hindi Urdu from Akbar & Birbal about the Mango Tree.

It also includes an activity called the Script of Life where GPs listen to their Nurturer describe in Hindi Urdu how to do a common every day activity like making mango lassi. Those doing sessions together in person or online may consider using the Shared Experience Activity to actually try out one of these recipes together and then make a recording in Hindi Urdu documenting all they experienced! Check out our recordings on making a mango shake or mango lassi in Hindi Urdu and fully immerse yourself in the cultural sensation of the season by actually trying it yourself!

GPA Phase 4:

Phase 4 of the Growing Participator Approach is 500 hours and is all about forming deep personal relationships in your target language. So learners will interview a native speaker about their life and use that recording in Hindi Urdu to form the content of their class- full of rich vocabulary, cultural insights, and real-life meaning!

Ask your Nurturer if they have any sweet memories related to mango in their family. Ask them which variety they enjoy the most and when in the mango season is the best time to buy.

By going deep into the life stories of your Nurturer, you will find you learn more broad insights also about South Asian culture as a whole.

GPA Phase 5:

Phase 5 of GPA is another recommended 500 hours and is the phase of "Widening Understanding." In this phase, Growing Participators begin to listen to Native-to-Native speech. Up to this point, sessions have always been a Nurturer speaking directly to a learner. But now, the learner has laid a strong enough foundation to begin to listen to the increased rate of speech and more street-speak vocabulary of locals when they are speaking with one another.

While many learners of Hindi Urdu may be able to get through Phase 4 with fewer than the general GPA 500 hour recommendation, most learners of Hindi Urdu will feel the need to do more than 500 hours in Phase 5 to really be able to engage well in dialogue with natives as they are in a group with other native speakers. South Asian languages like Hindi Urdu are incredibly mixed and about as varied as the mango varieties of India. It takes hours and hours of listening and speaking and engaging in conversation with locals before one can really hang at a local level.
